FLORIDA’S EMERALD COAST CREATES A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ALL
April 26, 2010

DESTIN • FORT WALTON BEACH • OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. – Mates and lassies of all ages are invited to attend the 55th Annual Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, June 3- 7, 2010, along Florida’s Emerald Coast. The southern sea towns of Destin • Fort Walton Beach • Okaloosa Island celebrate summer with peg-legged pirate parties, featuring gala-dressed pirates aboard more than 500 ships invading the harbor to “capture” Fort Walton Beach in honor of local pirate legend, William Augustus “Billy Bowlegs” Bowles (http://www.destin-fwb.com).

This Buccaneer bash is just one part of a summer event extravaganza of more than 50 seaside festivals, competitions and special events along the famous 24 miles of sugar-white sand and brilliant emerald-green water of Florida’s upper Gulf coast. Landlubbers grab their peg-legs for the Pirate Walk to go trick-or-treating “pirate style” and “yo ho ho with a bottle of rum” at the 3rd Annual Billy Bowlegs Pub Crawl, exploring the bars and restaurants of the beaches. Spectators see a skirmish take place as the Mayor of Fort Walton Beach, Mike Anderson, defends the Emerald Coast as Capt. Billy and his Armada seize the shore. As night falls, visitors watch the moonlit Torchlight Parade and the largest fireworks display in Northwest Florida over Santa Rosa Sound. Capt. Billy’s arrival is celebrated across the Emerald Coast with food, live entertainment, arts, crafts, coastal treasure hunts and more.

A wide range of accommodations are available, from beachfront hotels and a bed and breakfast, to condominiums and vacation homes. A sampling of accommodations and rates good during the Billy Bowlegs Festival includes:

Days Inn – Ft. Walton Beach from $139 per night
Four Points by Sheraton – Destin/Ft. Walton from $145 per night
Destin West Beach & Bay Resort from $215 per night
Breakers Ft. Walton Beach from $235 per night

Along with the festive Billy Bowlegs activities, Destin • Fort Walton Beach • Okaloosa Island present simple pleasures -- the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” 1,080 holes of golf, undeniably fresh seafood and some of the world’s finest underwater shelling.
