August 19, 2009

DESTIN • FORT WALTON BEACH • OKALOOSA ISLAND — Florida’s Emerald Coast – kicks off the Destin Fishing Rodeo with the 31st Annual Destin Seafood Festival, taking place Oct. 2-4, 2009, at HarborWalk Village. In addition to the scrumptious selection of the area’s freshest seafood, more than 36,000 visitors and locals will enjoy live entertainment, local arts and crafts, children’s activities and more (www.destin-fwb.com).

This year’s theme of the Destin Seafood Festival is Our Harbor, History and Heritage. Situated along Florida’s upper Gulf coast, the festival takes place in the home of the state’s largest charter fishing fleet, returning to its original locale at HarborWalk Village, alongside Destin’s harbor front. Headliners include Survivor, performing on Friday at 8 p.m., and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts taking the stage Saturday at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the Destin Seafood Festival may be purchased through the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. Passes for the entire three-day weekend are $15, or you may purchase daily tickets for $5 each on Friday and Sunday, and $10 on Saturday. For a complete schedule of events and festival information, visit www.DestinSeafoodFestival.org or contact the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce at (850) 837-6241.

The Destin Fishing Rodeo takes place for the entire month of October. Established in 1948, the rodeo is the ultimate fishing tournament for saltwater anglers of all ages. The Destin Fishing Rodeo is free to anglers who fish aboard any boat registered in the rodeo. Daily weigh-ins take place on the docks at A.J.’s Seafood & Oyster Bar from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. More than 30,000 anglers compete throughout the month, with over $100,000 awarded in cash and prizes – including a rod and reel for every child who enters a fish weighing more than one-pound.

Along with the Destin Seafood Festival and Fishing Rodeo, Destin • Fort Walton Beach • Okaloosa Island present simple seaside pleasures year-round, from basking in the sun along 24 miles of sugar-white sands and fishing the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” to teeing off on 1,080 holes of golf and enjoying some of the world’s finest underwater shelling.
